Commenting on the 'Free Gaza' flotilla clash in which 10 activists are thought to have died and many injured Liberal Democrat MEP Graham Watson has called for thorough and independent investigation. He said;
"There is no doubt that Monday's violent scenes demand an independent and credible investigation that examines impartially the actions of all those involved. Without ensuring such an investigation takes place, Israel is at risk of damaging further its relationship with the international community and important allies around the world."
Watson also warned that failure to deal with the incident, and the continued blockade of Gaza, jeopardises the long term security of Israel rather than making it safer. He said;
"I hope that the Israeli government will heed the chorus of international calls to end the blockade of Gaza. Israel has a right to defend itself from terrorists and a duty to guarantee the security if its citizens, but sieges and seizures do not serve this purpose.
"Whilst the people of Gaza are starved of vital humanitarian supplies, Israel ferments anger and resentment all around the world. This is counterproductive for both the long interests of Israel and efforts to secure a lasting and equitable peace in the region."
